29 4 ever.

I read this morning on the Velo News mountain bike site that the Gary Fisher team is 100% 29er for 2010. Great for them, I’ve been on 29ers for four years now and I knew from the first ride that it was the bike I would be riding for the foreseeable future.
When I started on my first 29er I was the only guy in the Pro/Semipro field here in AZ on one, last year at least 75% raced one. If you’re a taller rider they are a great option because you just seem to fit the bike better. The Fisher crew seems to be able to fit even the short ladies on them as well. Even those concerned about weight are coming around; the Super Fly is as number as any bike on the market.

I could write forever on the benefits of a 29er, I’ll let this little triumph of the big wheel crowed speak for its self. Once you have thrown a leg over the big wheels, let them carry you through the washes you’ll be sold as well.

And to think I raced a 24" wheel single speed back in the early 90's. I loved the lightness and quickness but took a beating on rocky trails. I just bunny hopped all I could. I do think the 29er makes sense but may never know from owning one. Do you have more spoke breakage with the more leverage at the wheel? I did not have as many problems with 24" as with 26" wheels.

Just think monster truck Lenny, bigger wheels=smaller obstacles. The momentum is the real key though, once you’re at speed it’s hard to flow it down.

I was 35 before I ever rode a mountain bike and had to learn from kids how to jump, bunnyhop and dive over dropoffs. I copied their smooth track cruisers and had some success with the design. this predates suspension so we just jumped anything we could. Check out the bike at http://lennyh.com with me onboard.
